Luther completed its American Rivers Conference regular season schedule in Cedar Rapids, Iowa this afternoon and defeated Coe College by a final of 6-3. The win secured at least a second place finish in the league standings. Wartburg College (7-0) sits atop the league standings and has one match remaining on its schedule that will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the University of Dubuque. A Spartan win over the Knights would result in the Norse sharing the league title.
In today's match, Luther jumped out to a 3-0 lead following doubles. Shelby Cook and Britta Pressler improved to 6-1 in A-R-C action, 9-4 overall this fall, after posting an (8-1) victory at No. 1. Devon Bourget and Kelsey Kruse remained unbeaten in conference play at No. 2 posting an (8-2) win. Ellie Hemker and Anna Spencer teamed up for only the second time this fall and won at No. 3 (8-6).
Luther secured the match victory thanks to three wins in singles action. Pressler defeated Eliza Sundermann (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) at No. 2, while Cook at No. 3 and Hemker at No. 5 won in straight sets. Cook defeated Stephanie Bush (6-3, 6-0) and Hemker defeated Ella White (6-3, 6-2).
The wins gives Luther an A-R-C record of 7-1, 8-3 overall. Coe fell to 6-2 in league play, 7-3 overall.
Luther will wrap up the fall schedule at the American Rivers Conference Individual Tournament that will be held Oct. 12-13. The two-day tournament will be played at the Prairie Ridge Tennis Courts, Ankeny, Iowa. Start time is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. both days.
