In a battle for first place in the American Rivers Conference, Wartburg College defeated Luther by a final of 5-4 this afternoon in the valley.
The Norse jumped out to a 2-1 lead following doubles, only to see the Knights post four wins in singles, to secure the come-from-behind victory. The win also assured the Knights at least a share of the A-R-C title. The Knights (7-0) are undefeated with one match remaining. That match will be played against Dubuque, in Dubuque, Iowa on Tuesday.
With the loss, both Luther (6-1) and Coe (4-1) have one loss in league play and wrap up their league schedules against each other in Cedar Rapids, Iowa tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Coe plays both Central and Simpson today.
In doubles, Shelby Cook and Britta Pressler defeated Hannah Fox and Ashley Rottinghaus (8-2) at No. 1. Devon Bourget and Kelsey Kruse won a hard fought (9-8 (10-8)) decision over Alex Petersen and Sydney Rottinghaus at No. 3. Stephanie Almquist and Anna Spencer were defeated (8-6) at No. 3 by Lauren O'Brian and Rachel Zittergruen.
In singles, the Norse posted wins at No. 1 and No. 3 in straight sets by finals of (6-0, 6-0). Bourget defeated Ashley Rottinghaus at No. 1 and Pressler defeated Sydney Rottinghaus at No. 3.
Almquist at No. 2 was defeated by Fox (6-4, 3-6, 6-3). Cook at No. 4 and Kruse at No. 5 both lost in straight set tie breaker matches. Cook was defeated by O'Brian (6-4, 7-6 (7-5)) and Kruse was defeated by Petersen (7-6 (7-5), 6-0).
Ellie Hemker at No. 6 was defeated in straight sets by Madison Overman (6-3, 6-1).
