Friday, Feb. 28 Recaps:
Game 1: It was the season opener for Luther this afternoon against Blackburn College. This game was played at the Rochester Regional Dome, Rochester, Minn.
Luther defeated Blackburn 9-1 in five innings. The Norse scored four runs in the third, two in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Blackburn's lone run came in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded walk.
The Norse scored their nine runs on 11 hits, while the pitching staff held Blackburn to three hits.
Lead-off hitter Hannah Halverson led the Norse attack driving in three runs. Halverson was 4-for-4 that included two triples and a double. Paige Timmerman, who batted in the second slot, was 2-for-4 with two rbi and clean-up hitter Maleah Georgen was 1-for-2 with two rbi. Designated player Emily Versnik also drove in a run in the third inning.
Abbey Gapinski picked up her first collegiate win in the circle. Gapinski threw three innings, gave up two hits and struck out one.
Game 2 Recap:
Luther wrapped up its first day of action with a 6-3 victory over Macalester College (MN). The Norse scored three runs in the second, two in the third and one in the fifth. The Scots scored a run in the second, fourth and fifth frames.
Kendra Cooper went the distance in the circle. Cooper allowed three runs on four hits, walked four and struck out four.
Elsa Skeie and Kyal Heydt both drove in two runs. Skeie had a sacrifice fly to right in the third and hit a solo homerun over the center field fence in the fifth. Heydt drove in both of her runs with a double in the second.
Luther is now 2-0 and will return to action on Sunday, March 1. Luther will return to the Rochester Regional Dome and will play UW-Platteville at Noon and Gustavus Adolphus College (MN) at 2:00 p.m.
Game One: In game one this afternoon, Luther jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first en route to an 8-2 victory over UW-Platteville. The Norse scored their six runs on six hits that included doubles by Maleah Georgen and Sydney Schultz. Luther added two more runs in the sixth.
Elsa Skeie and Georgen was both credited with two rbi, while Hannah Halverson and Kendra Cooper both drove in one run.
Cooper went the distance in the circle picking up her second win of the year. Cooper spread five hits, walked two and struck out two.
The victory gives Luther an overall record of 3-0. UW-Platteville fell to 2-2.
Game Two: Luther improved to 4-0 after defeating Gustavus Adolphus College 3-2 in today's second and final game at the Rochester Regional Dome.
Luther scored a run in the first and added two more in the second, while Gustavus posted both of its runs in the bottom half of the same frame.
Luther tallied 11 hits, but stranded eight runners on base. Paige Timmerman and Kyal Heydt both had two hits. Hannah Halverson, Annie See, Elsa Skeie, Maleah Georgen, Hannah Nelsen, Sydney Schultz and Emily Fell all had one. Skeie, Schultz and Fell all drove in a run.
Kendra Cooper picked up the win allowing just two hits and no runs in the final four innings. Courtney Cooper pitched the first three frames and allowed two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out six.
Luther will return to action Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8. The Norse will return to the Rochester Regional Dome for games against Augustana (IL) and Grinnell College on Saturday, and Lawrence University and Ripon College on Sunday.
