Luther and St. Mary's University faced each other in a non-conference double header this afternoon at the RCTC Dome in Rochester, Minn. These games were moved to Rochester after both Winona, Minn. and Decorah were blessed with several inches of snow this past Tuesday.
In game one, the Norse scored nine runs on 12 hits and defeated the Cardinlas 9-0 in five innings. Natalie Stockman and Blake Banowetz, who were both 2-for-4, drove in three runs and two runs respectively. Ashley Burrows, Anna Strien and Bailey Victoria also had multiple hit efforts all going 2-for-3. Burrows scored three times and Strien twice.
It took two extra innings before Luther could secure its 17th win in a row in game two. Trailing 2-1 facing their last at-bats in the bottom of the ninth, the Norse strung together four hits and a walk that scored two runs, to secure the 3-2 come-from-behind victory. Banowetz, who was 3-for-5 that included two doubles, drove in the game winner with a single to left field.
Burrows became Luther's all-time leader for career hits on her second trip to the plate of game one. Her single broke the school record of 206 career hits held by Shari Huber (2010-13). She finished the day the afternoon with five hits and now has a career total of 211.
Samantha Bratland picked up both wins in the circle. Bratland faced 18 batters in game one and allowed just two hits and struck out six. In the nightcap, she took over in the top of the fifth and allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out nine. With her 15 strike outs today, she moved into the fourth slot all-time in this category with a career total of 412. Her two wins also moved her into a tie for third for career wins with Becki Buls (2004-07) with 54.
The Norse return to action on Monday, April 9 when they will play UW-River Falls. This non-conference double header will also take place at the RCTC Dome with a start time of 11:00 a.m.
