Luther posted its eighth and ninth wins in a row sweeping Buena Vista University 8-0 (5) and 6-5 this afternoon. The two wins keeps Luther atop the Iowa Conference standings with a mark of 9-1. Buena Vista fell to 6-6.
In game one, Luther tallied nine hits, four that were home runs. Natalie Stockman, who finished the game going 2-for-3 with three RBI, sent both of her hits over the fence. She hit a two-run shot in the first frame and had a solo shot in the fourth for her seventh and eighth home runs of the year. One batter before Stockman hit her second home run, Anna Strien hit a two-run home run to left field, her fifth of the season. Blake Banowetz led off the second with a home run over the left field fence, her third of the year.
Samantha Bratland picked up the win in the circle. Bratland faced 13 batters, allowed one hit and struck out three. Amanda Witzlib pitched the final frame and struck out two of the face batters she faced.
Game two was a bit different as both teams combined for 22 hits, 11 each. The Beavers led 5-3 after two-and-a-half. Luther tied the game with two in the bottom of the third and neither teams could produce a run until the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of that seventh, Strien led off with a single up the middle. Stockman followed with a walk-off double to right-center field, that scored Strien from first base.
Ashley Burrows, Strien and Stockman all tallied multiple hits. Burrows was 2-for-4 and scored once from the lead-off slot. Strien went 3-for-3 that included a three-run home run in the first. Stockman was 2-for-4 and drove in one run. Bailey Victoria and Megan Bonnett were each credited with an RBI in the third inning.
Bratland was credited with the win in relief. Bratland took over in the third and allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out four. She is now 16-2 for the season.
The victory gives No. 4 Luther an overall record of 31-3, the tenth year in a row it has posted 30-plus wins in a season. The Norse have now defeated the Beavers 26 games in a row dating back to May 5, 2006.
Luther returns to Iowa Conference play tomorrow when it will host University of Dubuque at 1:00 p.m.
