Luther took one more step towards a third consecutive Iowa Conference championship this afternoon in Pella, Iowa. Luther, ranked No. 4 in the NCAA III faced No. 12 Central in a battle for first place. The Norse swept the Dutch 4-2, 3-1 and are now alone atop the league standings with a mark of 7-1. Central, Coe and Wartburg are now tied for second with records of 7-3.
In game one, Bailey Victoria drove in all four runs. Victoria drove in two runs in the top of the first with a single to center field, and hit a two-run home run to left field in the third. She finished going 2-for-4 at the plate. Ashley Burrows and Sara Nelson were also 2-for-4.
Samantha Bratland (14-2) went the distance in the circle. Bratland allowed two runs on five hits, walked three and struck out four.
In the nightcap, the Norse scored all three of their runs in the third inning. Burrows and Nelson started the frame with back-to-back infield hits. Two batters later, Victoria drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Blake Banowetz sent a single to center field that scored both Burros and Nelson. Banowetz scored when Addy Pender, the eighth batter for the Norse in the frame, reached on an error.
Central's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh. Norse starter Annie Versnik spread six hits and walked one in seven innings of work. She is now 15-1 with an ERA of 0.87.
This Saturday and Sunday, Luther will continue the Iowa Conference schedule at home. The Norse will host the Beavers of Buena Vista University on Saturday and University of Dubuque on Sunday. Both double headers will begin at 1:00 p.m.
