No. 5 Luther improved to 25-3 sweeping UW-River Falls by scores of 5-3 (8) and 10-0 (5) this afternoon here in Decorah.
In game one, the Norse needed some late inning heroics to send the game into extra innings. Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Anna Strien drove in Sara Nelson with a double down the right field line, that leveled the score 3-3. Nelson started the frame with a single and scored from first base on the Strien's second hit of the game.
In the eighth, Sammie Harris hit a walk-off, two run home run, with one out. It was the only hit of the game for Harris and her first home run of the year.
Samantha Bratland (12-2) went the distance in the circle. Bratland allowed three runs on five hits, walked six and struck out nine.
In the nightcap, Luther scored four runs in both the first and third innings and put two on the board in the second en route to the five inning victory. Anna Strien drove in four runs going 3-for-3, that gave her a combined effort at the plate for the afternoon of 5-for-6 and six RBI.
Addy Pender hit her third home run of the year, a two-run shot to center field in the third frame. The blast came one pitch after it looked like she had flied out to right field, but an illegal pitch was called on the play that brought Pender back to the plate with a 3 and 2 count.
Annie Versnik and Amanda Witzlib combined for the shutout. Versnik (13-1) pitched the first three innings and allowed four hits. Witzlib threw the final two innings and struck out four of the nine batters she faced.
Luther returns to Iowa Conference play on Wednesday, April 12 when it travels to Loras College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
