The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has announced that Hoff Field/Luther College Softball Stadium has been named the 2019 Turf Athletics/NFCA Division III Field of the Year.
This award, made possible by NFCA Official Sponsor Turface Athletics, recognizes the top fields/stadiums in the nation at all levels, for their flawless grounds maintenance and exceptional playing surfaces. The winners were selected by the NFCA Awards Committee.
In 2016, the Luther College softball stadium and Betty A. Hoff Field were dedicated. That same year, upgrades were made with new netting, an elevated press box and stadium seating. The seating was purchased out of the former Minneapolis Metrodome and refurbished prior to installing. This past summer, the infield was resurfaced with Ball Field Aggregate dolomitic limestone. The dugouts, constructed in 2008, feature curved beams in a Norwegian-inspired design and individual lockers in the home dugout.
Betty A. Hoff Field was named after legendary NFCA Hall of Famer Betty Hoff who was head coach of the Norse for 33 years from 1969-2001. During her tenure she compiled an overall record of 544-343-1. She was inducted into the NFCA Hall of Fame in 1992.
"This is an incredible honor," stated Luther head coach Renae Hartl. "Although the great post-season events that have been held in this stadium like conference tournaments and NCAA Regionals are remembered the most, it is pretty cool that our players get to train on this field every day."
"Associate head coach Teri Olson and assistant coach Miranda McCay have spent hours weeding, edging, doing clay repair and preparing the field for game day and every practice. We are also fortunate to have a tremendous maintenance crew that grooms the outfield grass, does the painting and keeps our stadium pristine. I would also like to thank retired director of athletics Joe Thompson who was the catalyst behind the renovation of the dugouts and building of the stadium."
