The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has announce the 45 players chosen for the 2016 NFCA Division III All-America softball teams. Those selected were honored Wednesday, May 25 during the NCAA Division III Championship banquet at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia.
Luther College senior Miranda McCay was named a third-team NFCA All-American at second base.
McCay, who played every position during her Luther career except pitcher and first base, finished her senior campaign batting .364 with 41 RBI. She posted a slugging percentage of .510 that included 12 doubles, three triples and one home run, all from the lead-off slot in the Norse batting lineup. She led the team with 30 walks and struck out just eight times in 143 at-bats. Defensively, she was credited with 68 put outs, 70 assists and seven errors for a fielding percentage of .952.
Earlier this year she was named the Iowa Conference Position Player of the Year and joined an elite of group of former Norse players named all-conference four times during their careers. She was also named all-Region for the second time.
"Miranda definitely left her mark on our program," commented Head Coach Renae Hartl. "A true utility player over her career, she stepped up defensively each year to help her team in a new position. She is a true student of the game and what she has done for her team over the years as our constant in the lead-off position is remarkable. We are very proud to have her name added to the list of Luther's greatest softball student-athletes."
With this honor, Luther has now had 21 players earn 24 NFCA All-American honors. McCay becomes the 15th player to be named an All-American during Coach Hartl's 15-year career.
