The Luther College Norse, ranked No. 7 in the NCAA III, swept UW-Stevens Point this afternoon and posted the programs 1000th victory. The Norse defeated the Pointers 10-0 (5) and 8-0 (6) securing their 20th and 21st victories in a row. During this stretch 12 of the games have been shutouts.
This year marks the 48th year of Luther softball. In 47-plus years, Luther has tallied a record of 1000-505-1.
Remarkably, this program has had only two heads coaches. Betty Hoff coached the Norse from 1969-2001. In 33 seasons, Hoff posted a career record of 544-343-1. She led the Norse to four consecutive IIAC titles (1985, 86, 87, 88), eight consecutive NCAA III Regional appearances (1985-1992) and three national tournament appearances finishing 4th (1985), 4th (1990) and 5th (1991). Prior to the NCAA III, she led Luther to AIAW state titles four times (1972, 1974, 1978, 1981) and to two AIAW National Tournaments finishing 5th in 1974 and 1981.
Head Coach Renae Hartl is in the midst of her 15th season. Following today’s games her career mark is 456-162. She has led the Norse to four IIAC titles (2007, 2011, 2012, 2015) and eight NCAA III Regional appearances (2007, 2009-2015), and four national tournament appearances finishing 5th (2010), 7th (2011), 5th (2012) and 5th (2013).
