The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) has announced that freshman pitcher Samantha Bratland has been named the league's Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 20.
Bratland pitched 11 innings last week without allowing a run en route to a 2-0 record. She tossed a no-hitter during Luther's 2-0 victory over Utica College (NY) and also picked up a win in relief in Luther's 8-1 victory over Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT).
During her no-hitter, She allowed four base runners and only one reached second after a hit-by-pitch and walk in the second frame. She struckout nine, that included three in the bottom of the seventh. Between the second and sixth frames, she retired 12 consecutive batters.
Bratland's no-hitter was the first for a Norse pitcher since 2012 All-American Becca Girvan defeated Loras College, April 22, 2014 in Decorah 9-0 in five innings.
At the time of this release, she led the Iowa Conference with an 0.93 ERA (minimum of 20 innings) and opposing batting average of .196.
Luther, ranked No. 7 in the NCAA III, is currently on its annual spring trip to Clermont, Florida and the PFX Spring Games. The Norse entered the 10-game schedule with a record of 9-1.
