The Iowa Conference has released the 2015 all-conference softball team and eight members of the Luther College squad have been recognized. Head Coach Renae Hartl was named the Coach of the Year.
First team honors were awarded to pitcher Amanda Witzlib, catcher Carli Radil, outfielder Ashley Burrows and shortstop Katie Wieland. Radil is making her second consecutive appearance as a first team honoree, the first as a catcher. She led the Norse in conference play batting .500 and posting a slugging percentage of .900. She tallied five doubles, a triple and three home runs while driving in 14. Burrows batted .425 with nine RBI, while Wieland batted .465 with 17 RBI.
Witzlib was also named the league's Pitcher of the Year. Witzlib posted a record of 6-0 in league play that included five complete games, one shutout and 54 strikeouts in 39 innings of work en route to an ERA of 2.51.
Entering the NCAA III National Tournament, Witzlib has an ERA of 2.36 and leads the Norse pitching staff with a record of 18-3 that includes 11 complete games and six (two combined) shutouts. She had pitched 124 1/3 innings striking out 145 that ranks ninth on Luther's single season top-10 list. She registered six or more strikeouts in 12 of 27 appearances, including a season high 16 in a 7-1 victory over University of Dubuque.
Selected second team all-conference included Alise Miller at first base, Miranda McCay at third base, outfielder Lindsey Uphoff and designated player Anna Strien. Miller, Uphoff and Strien are all making their first appearance on the all-conference team, while McCay is making her third. McCay was a first team honoree as an outfielder in 2013 and 2014 and this year was moved to third base where she was credited with 15 putouts and 23 assists and zero errors. She batted .405 and posted a .560 on base percentage as the leadoff hitter. Miller batted .415 with 17 RBI and led the squad with five home runs. Uphoff batted .433 and Strien batted .471 with 11 RBI.
Hartl was named the league's Coach of the Year for a third time (2007, 2012, 2015). In the midst of her 14th season, she has compiled a career record of 431-159 for a winning percentage of .730. During her tenure, her teams have has also made eight NCAA III National Tournament appearances in the last nine years and will host the Decorah Regional May 8-10. Hartl has coached 64 all-conference, three conference MVP's, 51 NFCA Midwest Region selections, and 14 All-Americans. Her teams have finished fifth at the NCAA III National championships in 2010, 2012 and 2013; and seventh in 2011.
