For the second time in school history Luther is off to a 6-0 start. The Norse ranked No. 6 in the North Region, defeated No. 8 Macalester this afternoon by a score of 2-1. All three goals were scored in the first 45 minutes of action.
The combination of Ellie Bunz (4) from Melisse Chasse (5) gave the Norse a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Lauren Hughes (3) scored what proved to be the game winner, her second of the season, unassisted at 27:33. Macalester pulled to within one in the 41st minute, when Margaret Nemetz found the back of the Norse net.
Luther controlled the tempo of this match out shooting Macalester 25-6. The Norse placed 19 shots on goal and also held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The goalkeeper combination of Lauren Thormodsgard and Molly Hilgart turned away three Macalester shots on goal.
The win snapped a three-match losing streak to the Scots and was also only the second win for the Norse in the 13-match series that dates back to Sept. 27, 1992. Luther's other victory was a 1-0 final at home in 2010.
Luther returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 when it will travel to UW-La Crosse for a match that will begin at 7:00 p.m.
