The Luther College women's soccer team made history tonight becoming the first No. 5 seed to advance to the conference tournament championship match in the 24-year history of the tournament. The Norse defeated regular season champions and the No. 1 seed Loras College 3-2 in tonight's semifinal match in the Rock Bowl. The victory was the first for the Norse over the Duhawks in the semifinal round in seven tries.
Trailing 2-0 with 15 minutes left to play, Luther scored three goals in a five minute span, to secure the come-from-behind victory.
Lizzy DePrenger, who earlier today was named all-conference for the first time of her career, got things started with an unassisted goal at 75:09. DePrenger's goal was her third of the year. Megan Munger scored the equalizer at 76:09, her third goal of the year, assisted by Isabel Iverson (1). Hailey Sanchez, Luther's leading scorer, scored the game winner unassisted at 80:11.
Norse keeper Kennedy Bergren faced nine shots on goal and turned away seven, five in the first frame and two in the second.
The victory gives Luther an overall record of 9-8-2, while Loras fell to 13-5.
Luther advances to the conference tournament championship match for the third time in the last four years and eighth time in school history. The Norse have claimed the tournament championship twice, the first time in 1996 and the second in 2016.
Luther will now travel to No. 2 Wartburg College on Saturday, Nov. 9 for the championship match. Wartburg advanced to the championship match after defeating No. 3 University of Dubuque 4-0 tonight in Waverly, Iowa. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
