The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has released the women’s NCAA III 2016 all-region teams. Each of the eight regions named 15 players to a first, second and third team.
Luther College had four players, all seniors, named second team all-North Region. This list included forwards Ellie Bunz (Clive, Iowa/Waukee) and Melisse Chasse (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview), midfielder Lauren Hughes (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) and defender Gabi Meirick (Pella, Iowa/Pella). All four were named first team all-Iowa Conference early this month.
This is the first time that four players have been so honored in the same year. Last year, the Norse had three players named all-North Region.
Bunz and Chasse are making their second appearance on the North Region team. Bunz was a third team honoree in 2015 and Chasse was a second team selection. Both Hughes and Meirick are being recognized for the first time of their careers.
These four helped lead Luther to an overall record of 13-3-3. The Norse were crowned regular season Iowa Conference co-champions (6-0-2), won the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament, and qualified for the NCAA III National Soccer Tournament for the first time in school history. In the national tournament, Luther defeated Denison University (OH) 1-0 in the first round and then lost to Washington University – St. Louis 3-0. Washington University has advanced to the tournament semifinals that will be played Friday, Dec. 2 at Kerr Stadium, Salem, Virginia.
Luther is coached by Russ Schouweiler who has completed his seventh season. Schouweiler and his staff were named the Iowa Conference Coaching Staff of the Year. This is the second time Schouweiler has been so honored. During his tenure he has led the Norse to an overall record of 76-49-7, 30-19-3 in the Iowa Conference.
