The 2017 Iowa Conference Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 28. Wartburg College will host this year's conference season finale.
The races will be held on the Max Championships Cross Country Course. The starting line is west of the Wartburg soccer and lacrosse fields adjacent to a grove of trees. The start traverses both the soccer and lacrosse fields, heading toward a large orange banner. From there, the course moves across the railroad tracks and is mostly prairie thereafter. There are several small roads that the runners will cross; however, they will be covered with polyurethane matting. Both the men and women have very long 600-meter home stretches with the finish line adjacent to the starting boxes. Spectators have ample room to watch the races as they are able to cross the railroad tracks multiple times.
The men's 8K race will take place first with a start time scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Luther has won a league best 32 Iowa Conference championships, the last was 2010.
The women's 6K race follows with a start time slated for Noon. Luther was won 12 league titles, the last was 2010.
The top-15 competitors in both races will earn all-conference honors. Seniors McKenzie Carney and Anna Ryden are the only returners on either team that earned all-conference honors last year. Carney has an opportunity to join an elite list of Luther women that earned all-conference four times. Carney placed 12th (2014), 11th (2015) and 10th (2016). If she accomplishes this feat, she will become the eighth women to do so.
