Luther picked up its first win of the season tonight defeating nationally ranked No. 17 Loras College 80-77 in the conference opener for the Norse.
After trailing the Duhawks 43-35 at halftime, Luther fell behind by 11 (51-40) with 6:34 left in the third frame. The Norse put together a 22-9 run and grabbed it first lead of the game with 2:12 remaining and finish the third with a two point advantage (62-60).
The two teams exchanged leads throughout the fourth quarter. The Duhawks largest lead in the fourth was three and Luther's was six. Marissa Schroeder, who recorded a double-double for the Duhawks, knocked down a jumper with 20 second left to level the score at 77-77, the sixth and final tie of the game. Luther's Coranda Vickerman scored what proved to be the game winner with nine ticks left on the clock, a trey assisted by Laura Hamilton. The Duhawks had three attempts in the final nine seconds but all came up short.
Four Norse tallied double digits. Laura Hamilton led all scorers with 16 points. Sarah Holtz had 14 and Kaci Jo Ames was credited with 10. Madi Spence also recorded a double-double thanks to 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Makenzie Kraemer and Kari Fitzpatrick led the Duhawks with 14 points each.
The win gives Luther an American Rivers Conference record of 1-0, 1-5 overall. Loras is now 1-1 in league play, 6-1 overall.
Luther will travel to Coe College this Saturday, Dec. 7. Tip-off in Cedar Rapids will take place at 2:00 p.m.
