Luther stayed one game out of first place after defeating the University of Dubuque 75-70 tonight in the Sotltz Sports Center.
After holding a slim 28-26 advantage at halftime, Luther outscored Dubuque 26-19 in the third frame and led 54-45. The Spartans battled back in the fourth quarter and took a 67-65 lead with 2:40 left in the game. The Norse answered with a 10-3 run down the stretch to secure the victory.
Both teams shot 36% but the difference in the game was Luther's 11 three-point baskets to Dubuque's eight. Dubuque won the battle of the boards 51-40.
Sarah Holtz led all scorers producing a career high 26 points. Holtz was 10-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Anna Edel and Kaylee Parks also tallied double digits with 11 points each. Madison Spence, who led the team with eight rebounds, was also credited with a career high seven blocked shots, two shy of the school record.
Dubuque was led by the trio of Jaden Kelley with 18, Abigail Zurcher with 16 and Josephine Thomas with 13.
The win gives Luther an American Rivers Conference record of 7-2, 8-8 overall. Dubuque fell to 1-9 in league play, 3-16 overall.
Luther returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 26 when it will host Buena Vista University. Start time will take place at 2:00 p.m.
