Wartburg College captured their first Iowa Conference Tournament championship since 2002 tonight at Levick Arena, defeating Luther 81-68 in title game.
Luther led for a majority of the first quarter before a three-point bucket by Katie Sommer with nine seconds left in the period, gave Wartburg its first lead of the game. The Knights led 22-21 at the end of the first quarter and extended their advantage to 37-31 at the halftime break. The Norse were not able to get any closer than six points throughout the rest of the game.
The Norse were led by the trio of Laura Hamilton with 16 points, Katie Waller had 15 and Anna Madrigal tallied 13 in her final game in a Norse uniform. Hamilton and Waller led the team collecting seven rebounds each. The Norse outrebounded the Knights 45-37.
Five Knights reached double digits led by Katie Sommer who poured in a game high 27 points. Sommer's was 8-of 13 that included a 3-for-6 efforts from behind the arch. She was also 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
The Norse end their season with a 17-10 record. This was the third consecutive year Luther advanced to the Iowa Conference Tournament championship game. It is the first time in the 18-year history of the conference tournament the Norse have advanced to the title game three consecutive times.
