Luther advanced to the Iowa Conference Tournament championship game for the third consecutive year after defeating Loras College 65-62 tonight in the Regents Center.
In a game that had only three lead changes and five ties, Luther took its first lead of the second half (58-57) when Anna Madrigal scored on a lay-up with 4:22 left in the game. The Duhawks Lori Obendorf, who finished the night with 12 points, tied the game for the final time (62-62) with a jumper off the glass in the paint with 48 seconds left on the clock. Katie Waller gave the Norse the lead for good with two free throws with 20 ticks left on the clock. A Loras turnover with seven seconds left, followed by a free throw by Grayson Schroeder, sealed the semifinal victory for the Norse.
Waller led all scorers with 17 points that included a 3-for-5 effort from behind the arch and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Laura Hamilton also tallied double digits with 13, while Madrigal chipped in eight. Hamilton also led the team with a game high eight rebounds and dished out four assists.
Erin Weaver and Cyerra Hutchins led the Duhawks with 15 points each.
The win was Luther's fourth in a row. The Norse are now 17-9 overall. Loras ends its season with a mark of 17-10.
Luther, the No. 2 seed of the tournament, will travel to No. 1 Wartburg on Saturday, Feb. 25 for the tournament championship game. Start time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
