Luther senior Michael Suarez (165) qualified for the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships. Suarez finished third at the NCAA Division III Lower Midwest Regional held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24, at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa. The top-three place winners in each weight class qualified for the national championships.
After winning his initial match, Suarez lost to Ben Hewson of Cornell College (6-3) in the quarterfinals during the first day of competition. Sunday, Suarez won his final four matches on the backside of the championship bracket and earned his first trip to the national finale. In the third place match, he defeated Hewson (3-2).
Ira Kuehn (184) finished fourth. After dropping a quarterfinal match to Josh Edel of Coe (6-2) on Saturday, Kuehn won three matches on Sunday, that set up a rematch against Edel in the third place match and was defeated (6-1).
Four other Norse wrestlers placed at the regional meet. Conner Murphy (125) and Tyler DiFiore (133) both placed sixth. Teagan Miller (157) finished seventh and Gilbert Valadez (149) brought home an eighth place finish.
Luther finished seventh in the 17-team regional posting 84 points. Wartburg claimed the team title (169.5), followed by Loras College (151.5) and Central College (119.5) that rounded out the top-three teams.
The NCAA Division III National Championships will be held March 8-9, in Roanke, Virginia.
