Luther hosted its own Open Tournament today to begin the 2018-19 campaign. No team scores were kept.
In the Elite Division, Gilbert Valadez (149) and Ira Kuehn (184) both placed third. Valadez posted a record of 3-1 with one major decision. He defeated Austin Thomas of Cornell College 5-2 in the third place match.
Kuehn was 2-1 for the day with one fall. He advanced to the semifinals with a fall (4:32) over Bryce Oveson of Cornell College. He was defeated 7-3 by Brandon Moen of Minnesota State-Mankato in the semifinals. He placed third following an injury default by Bryce Scott of Coe College.
Also in the Elite Division, Hunter Weaver (197) finished fourth dropping a 5-2 decision to Riley Kauzlaric of UW-Whitewater in the third place match.
DiFiore finished fifth posting a record of 4-1 that included two major decisions and one tech fall. He defeated Tyler Fleetwood of Wartburg (10-1) in the fifth place match.
Miller placed third with a record of 3-1 that included one fall and one major decision. In the third place match he defeated Joaquin Bautista of Wartburg College (11-2).
Weaver was 2-2 for day with two falls and finished fifth. In the fifth place match he pinned Colin Hondred of Cornell College (2:12).
Kennedy advanced to the title bout were he was defeated by fall by Kaleb Reeves of Coe College. Kennedy was 3-1 for the tournament that included two falls.
Luther returns to action one week from today when it will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Augsburg Open. Action begins at 9:00 a.m.
