Session One Recap: The first session is complete at the 2017 NCAA III National Championships and only Justin Kreiter (184) remains alive in the tournament. Kreiter advanced to the quarterfinals with a fall (2:25) over Ryan Shank of Waynesburg University. Kreiter, the No. 5 seed of the tournament, will face No. 4 Jordan Bushey of Oswego tonight.
Tristan Zurfluh (165) and Javier Reyes (174) were both eliminated from the tournament. Zurfluh lost his opening round match to Zach Zupan of Cortland in sudden victory 3-1. In the consolation bracket he was defeated by No. 7 Nick Velez 8-2. Zurfluh ends his career as a two-time national meet qualifier and one-time All-American. His career record is 82-59.
Reyes was defeated by Sonnieboy Blanco of Washington and Jefferson 11-5 in the opening round. In the consolation bracket, Reyes was defeated by Michael LaBell of Johnson and Wales 14-4. Reyes ends his career as a two-time national qualifier. His career record is 79-60.
Session Two Recap: Justin Kreiter earned his second All-America honor is as many years. Kreiter advanced to the semifinals defeating No. 4 Jordan Bushey of Oswego 8-1. Kreiter will face the top seed of the tournament Owen Webster of Augsburg tomorrow morning.
Session Three Recap: Justin Kreiter (184) advanced to the championship match defeating the No. 1 seed of the bracket 5-3 in today's semifinals. Kreiter defeated Owen Webster of Augsburg College who entered the match with a record of 31-1 and a 28-match win streak. Prior to his loss to Kreiter he was 22-0 versus Division III wrestlers.
Kreiter struck first with a take down with 25 seconds left in the first period, but Webster recorded an escape as time expired. Kreiter started down in period two, recorded an escape and recorded another take down late in the period and held a 5-2 lead heading into period number three. Webster recorded an escape to complete the scoring for the match.
Kreiter will face the No. 3 seed Jordan Newman of UW-Whitewater in tonight's championship bout.
All of the championship matches will be video streamed. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
