Nationally ranked wrestlers Jayden DeVilbiss (184) and Dakota Gray (149) headlined Luther's efforts at the University of Northern Iowa Open this afternoon.
DeVilbiss, a two-time national meet qualifier and ranked No. 4 in the NCAA III, placed third. His only loss of the afternoon was a 13-10 decision to John Rizqallah of Michigan State University in the semifinals. DeVilbiss won the third place match with a 4-1 decision over NCAA II opponent Scott VanDeLoo of Minnesota State-Mankato. Three of his four wins on the afternoon were by fall. Following today's action, he has a season record of 11-1.
Gray, ranked No. 9, posted a record of 5-2 that included one fall and placed fifth. After dropping his opening match to Dyan Herman, an unattached wrestler from the University of Minnesota, Gray rattled off four consecutive victories before losing to Gunner Wolfensperger of Northern Iowa which sent him to the fifth place match.
Luther returns to action after finals this coming week. The Norse will host the 12-team Gator "Boots" Duals at McGavock High School, Nashville, Tenn., on Saturday, Dec. 20.
