Luther ventured to Michigan for a trio of matches, opening the weekend with a match-up against Wabash at the DeWitt Tennis Center in Holland, Mich. A late rally at No. 3 doubles gave the Norse a 2-1 lead and momentum that carried over into a singles sweep, giving Luther an 8-1 victory over the Little Giants.
Ramesh Karki and Kyle Appel started the scoring for Luther with an (8-4) win against Graham McMullen and Mark Troiano. After Wabash edged out the Norse by an (8-6) margin at No. 1, Luther’s Matt Bellio and Sam Cychosz rallied from a 7-4 deficit at No. 3, winning (9-7) over Nate Koelper and Mazin Hakim to give the Norse a 2-1 edge.
Isaiah Mayerchak came through with the first of six points for the Norse in singles, defeating Hakim (6-2, 6-4) at No. 6. Appel held off a second set rally from Koelper at No. 3, hanging on for a (6-0, 7-6 (4)) win, making it 4-1 in favor of Luther. Torstein Jystad clinched the victory with a win over Michael Makio at No. 2. After outlasting Makio by a (7-6 (5)) margin in the first set, Jystad pulled away with a 6-2 margin to close out the victory.
James Ayer continued his strong play at No. 5, defeating McMullen (6-4, 6-3) to make it a 6-1 Norse advantage. Ramesh Karki and Matt Bellio each came through with victories to close out the match. Karki beat Wade Miller (7-5, 6-2) at No. 1 while Bellio earned a third set super tie-breaker win (6-3, 4-6 (10-6) over Troiano at No. 3.
