The American Rivers Conference has announced that Luther College junior Grant Morton (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/The Hill) has been named the league's men's tennis player of the week for the week ending Sunday, May 5, 2019.
Morton helped lead Luther to the championship of the A-R-C Automatic Qualifier Tournament that was held May 3-4 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The title secured the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament, the seventh for the Norse in school history and first time since 2011.
The Norse defeated Central College 5-0 in the semifinals and went on to defeat regular season champions Coe College 5-2 in the championship match, with Morton posting the decisive match win at No. 2 singles in three sets over Nate Greiner (3-6, 6-3, 6-1).
In singles vs. Central he defeated David Boschma at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0). In doubles he teamed with sophomore Brook Norwood (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) at No. 3 and the duo defeated Bo Wilson and Ben Hediger of Coe (8-5) and Josh Phillips and Ethan St. John of Central (8-3).
Entering the first round of the NCAA III National Tournament, Morton has an 18-7 singles record and is 16-5 while playing doubles with Norwood.
