The United Soccer Coaches has announced the all-region teams for its eight regions today. Luther College senior defender Harry Merz (Auckland, New Zealand/Tawa College), senior forward Ben Keller (Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake) and senior midfielder Colin Hughes (Oregon, Wis.) were all named first-team all-North Region.
The trio helped lead Luther to a second consecutive appearance in the Elite 8 of the NCAA III National Tournament. The Norse finished their year with an overall mark of 17-5-3.
Merz, who was a second-team honoree a year ago, played a vital role helping the Norse post a goals-against-average of 0.96. After transferring from St. Edwards University (Texas) following his freshman year, he became a staple in the Norse defensive unit. He completed his career making 68 appearances that included 66 starts. He was credited with two goals and three assists for seven career points.
Keller is making his first appearance on the all-region team. He led the Norse this season scoring 16 goals, adding 13 assists for 45 points. His goal total ranks seventh, his assist total ranks fifth, and his point total ranks eighth on Luther's single season top-10 records.
He finished his career making 90 appearances that included 78 starts. He tallied 43 goals that ranks sixth on Luther's all-time list. His 31 career assists and 117 career points ranke tied for sixth for both categories all-time.
Hughes, a fifth-year senior, is also making his first appearance on the all-region team. He had his best year in a Norse uniform during the 2019 campaign producing seven goals and eight assists for 22 points. All three totals were single season career highs. He completed his career making 73 appearances that included 46 starts. He tallied nine goals and 11 assists for 29 points.
