Following the opening weekend of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men’s National Soccer Tournament, 16 teams remain from the 62-team field.
This past weekend, Luther College defeated Knox College (1-0 OT) and Dominican University (3-2) to advanced to the Round of 16, for the second time in school history since the tournament field was increased to a 62-team field. Luther’s last appearance in the Round 16 was 2011.
Luther will travel to The University of Chicago that will host the sectional rounds Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17-18.
On Saturday, the University of Chicago (16-2-1) will face Trinity University, Texas (17-1-3) at 1:00 p.m. Luther (18-3-1) will face the University of St. Thomas, Minn., (16-3-2) at 3:30 p.m.
The winners will advance to the Round of 8, with that Sunday match scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
The winner of Sunday’s match will advance to the semifinals and championship match weekend, that will be held at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNCG) Soccer Stadium, Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Luther is making its ninth appearance in the national tournament and has posted a tournament record of 9-7. The Norse have an unbeaten streak of 10 matches that dates back to a 2-1 home victory over Simpson College on Oct. 10.
Earlier this year, Luther defeated St. Thomas 2-1 in St. Paul, Minn., The last time they have met in the NCAA III National Tournament was Nov. 13, 2016 in the second round and St. Thomas posted a 2-0 victory. That same year, St. Thomas advanced to the semifinals before its season came to an end.
