The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) has announced the 2018 all-conference team for men's soccer. The all-conference team and Most Valuable Performers were voted upon by the head coaches of the league.
Luther had a league high seven players named to the all-conference team. This list included seniors Andrew Avram (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro), Rafael Broseghini (Rio De Janerio, Brazil/Colegio Andrews), Tristan Davenport (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), Aidan O' Driscoll (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margarets), Luke VonEschen (St. Louis Park, Minn.) and juniors Ben Keller (Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake) and Harry Merz (Wellington, New Zealand/Tawa College). This is the second time Avram, Broseghini, O'Driscoll and Keller have been named all-conference, while Davenport, Merz and VonEschen are all making their initial appearance on the all-conference squad.
It was also announced that O'Drisscoll was named the league's Offensive MVP and that VonEschen was named the Defensive MVP.
O’Driscoll is the first Luther player to be named Offensive MVP since the award was presented for the first time in 2013. Prior to the MVP award being split to recognize an offensive and defensive standout, Luther had seven players named conference MVP. With 11 points in league play, O’Driscoll tied for third in the conference for total points. His four goals tied for second-most in the conference and three assists ranked third.
VonEschen was part of a Norse defensive unit that finished conference play ranked number-one in goals-against average (0.65). As it enters play in the 2018 NCAA III National Tournament, Luther ranks 40th in NCAA Division III with a goals-against average of (0.74) helped by 10 shut outs. With this honor, VonEschen becomes the third consecutive Norse to earn Defensive MVP, joining Ahmed Osman (2017) and Myles Norville (2016).
Named honorable mention all-conference was senior forward Brunno Colon (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Bridgton Academy). A player must receive at least two votes to be named honorable mention all-conference.
Head Coach Chris Garcia-Prats, assistant coaches James Garcia-Prats, Nigel Nielsen and goalkeeper coach Ryan Martin were named the Coaching Staff of the Year. This is the third time since taking over the program in 2008 that the Luther coaching staff has been so honored. They were also presented this award in 2011 and 2017.
The Norse captured the 2018 A-R-C Tournament title after posting a regular season league record of 6-1-1. The title secured the league's automatic berth to the National Tournament, the ninth appearance for the Norse, and the fourth under the direction of Chris Garcis-Prats. Luther enters the tournament ranked No. 13 in the nation with an overall record of 16-3-1.
