The Luther College men's soccer team has been picked to finish second in the Iowa Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll released August 15. The Norse picked up three first place votes for a total of 55 points. Loras College, winners of five consecutive league titles, received six first place votes for a total of 61 points.
Luther, last year's Iowa Conference Tournament champion, returns eight starters from a team that finished the season ranked No. 23 in the NCAA III. The Norse tallied an overall record of 15-6-2 and advanced to the second round of the national tournament. The national tournament appearance was the eighth in school history and third under the direction of head coach Chris Garcia-Prats, who begins his 10th season this year. Garcia-Pratz has compiled a career mark of 107-58-17.
Top point producers returning include sophomore forward Benjamin Keller (15 points), junior forward Bruno Colon (8 points), and junior midfielders Aidan O'Driscoll (12 points), Rafael Broseghini (12 points) and Andrew Avram (9 points). Broseghini received honorable mention all-conference honors last season.
Junior Will Blain returns in front of the nets. Blain started 18 matches last season and posted a goals-against-average of 1.23 that included four shutouts. Senior defenders Ahmed Osman (8 points) and Bernardo Marottie (3 points) and junior Tristan Davenport (2 points), all made double digit starts last season and bring a wealth of experience in the first line of defense in front of Blain.
Luther opens the 2017 campaign at home on Friday, Sept. 2 when it will host Colorado College at 7:30 p.m.
