The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has released the men’s NCAA III 2016 all-region teams.
Luther College had three players, all seniors, recognized on the North Region Team. Named first team all-North Region was Nigel Nielsen (Spencer, Iowa). Named second team all-North Region was Lucas Beato (Araras, Brazil/Shattuck St. Mary’s (MN)) and Myles Norville (Bridgetown, Barbados/ Shattuck St. Mary’s (MN)).
This is the first time Nielsen has been so honored, while both Norville (2015) and Beato (2014) are making their second appearance on the second team.
These three helped lead Luther to an overall record of 15-6-2. After finishing in a four-way tie for third place (5-3) in the Iowa Conference standings, the Norse won the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament and qualified for the NCAA III National Tournament.
The national tournament appearance was the eighth in school history, first since 2013 and the third under the direction of Head Coach Chris Garcia-Prats. During his nine years, Garcia-Prats has produced a record of 107-58-17 that includes a mark of 44-22-3 in the Iowa Conference.
Luther won its opening round match against St. Norbert College 2-1 in double overtime and was eliminated by University of St. Thomas 2-0 in the second round.
