It was the American River Conference opener for both Luther and Central in Pella, Iowa this afternoon. The Dutch defeated the Norse 63-14.
Luther's two touchdowns came in the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter. Freshman quarterback Parker Kizer scored his first career touchdown, a three-yard run, that capped off a nine-play, 58-yard drive with 8:08 left in the fourth frame.
With 35 ticks left on the clock, Andrew Whalen scored his sixth career touchdown, a five-yard run. The score completed a 10-play, 82-yard drive by the Norse.
The player of the game was Central quarterback Blaine Hawkins, Hawkins was 13-of-15 for 349 yards and five touchdown passes. He connected on touchdown strikes of 41-yards, 60-yards, 40-yards, 51-yards and 33-yards.
Central racked up 550 yards of total offense. Luther produced solid numbers in this category as well, totaling 435 yards, 270 that came on the ground.
The loss gives Luther an overall record of 0-3, 0-1 in the A-R-C. Central improved to 3-0, 1-0 in the A-R-C.
One week from today Luther returns home to host Loras College. Kick-off is scheduled to take place at 1:00 p.m. in Carlson Stadium.
