Luther set a school record for total offense this afternoon in J. Leslie Rollins Stadium, as the Norse defeated the Beavers of Buena Vista University 36-14. Luther is off to its best start in the Iowa Conference (2-0) and overall record (3-1) since 2005.
The Norse compiled 608 yards of total offense, breaking the old mark of 601, that had been etched in the records books in 1983 versus William Penn. The Norse rushed for 436 yards on 66 carries, and threw for 172 yards on 13 attempts.
Sophomore quarterback Ian Kuykendall posted career highs for both rushing and passing yardage. Kuykendall led the Norse rushing attack with 178 yards on 28 carries and reached the end zone twice. He was also 8-of-13 for 172 yards and a touchdown, a 60-yard strike to Nick Slavens with 3:09 left on the clock in the second quarter.
Freshman fullback Anthony Hollingshed also went over the 100-yard mark for the second time this season. Hollingshed carried the football 17 times for 113 with a long of 49.
Junior fullback Yassine Ouazzani scored Luther's bookend touchdowns. He gave the Norse a 6-0 lead on a nine-yard plunge for his first career touchdown at 9:43 in the first quarter. He completed the afternoon's scoring with a 40-yard scamper with 7:31 left in the game. He finished the afternoon with 90 yards on 12 carries.
Slavens and Justin Montgomery also had career afternoons catching the football. Slavens caught three passes for 95 yards, and Montgomery caught four for 58 yards.
Defensively, Luther held Buena Vista to 159 yards on the ground and 171 in the air. The Norse were credited with seven tackles for loss for 32 yards, picked off Beaver quarterback Cole Miller twice and sacked him three times. Dante Joseph and Isaac Highum were credited with the interceptions, while Josh Olerud, Sam Scheidt, David Ponath, Joe Johnson and Colton Janssen were all in on the sacks. Olerud also led the team with seven tackles. Damon Stroup, Scheidt and Ponath were all credited with five and were followed by five players with four.
