Loras College - Military Appreciation Day

Its was military appreciation day today at Carlson Stadium and the fans that ventured out to watch this Iowa Conference football battle saw Luther snap its two-game losing streak with an impressive 31-21 victory over Loras College.

Billed as a game between two completely different style of football, the Norse running game dominated the afternoon. Loras enter the ball game ranked eighth in the nation in total offense averaging 526.8 yards per game with 400 coming by air. Luther was ranked seventh in the nation averaging 304 yards per game rushing. 

The Norse not only won the battle of total offense with 372 yards (341 on the ground) this afternoon, but also dominated the time of possession 47:20 to the Duhawks 12:40.  The Norse posted touchdown drives of 9:02 (15 plays-69 yards), 7:02 (14 plays-73 yards), 5:25 (10 plays - 78 yards) and the 11:20 (19 plays - 71 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Brady Letney carried the football 49 times for 234 yards and two touchdowns. His long was 50 on the third snap form scrimmage to start the third quarter. Letney's lone pass completion was a 31-yarder to Cooper Nelson that set up Luther's final score of the afternoon, a 32-yard field goal by Cory Wirth.

After giving up three touchdown passes of 59-yards, 48-yards and 62-yards in the first half, the Norse defensive unit settled in and blanked the Duhawks in the second half. The Norse had three take aways that included interceptions by Dante Joseph and David Ponath and a fumble recovery by Colton Janssen.

Box Score

The win gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 2-4, 3-4 overall. Loras fell to 3-3 in league play, 4-5 overall.

Next week Luther will host Simpson College for the final game of the 2015 campaign. Kick-off will take place in Carlson Stadium at Noon.
