The NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Committee announced the team and individual qualifiers for the 2019 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships on Sunday, Nov. 17.
In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals must qualify in their respective NCAA regions.
Thirty-two teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven person teams automatically qualified from each of the eight regions, for a total of 16 teams. Sixteen additional teams were selected at-large.
Fifty-six individuals, the first seven student-athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team, were selected to participate in each championship.
Two Luther runners, were selected to participate in the championships. These two were senior Vera Lindhorst (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) and freshman Ian Kelly (Littleton, Colo./Heritage). Both earned all-Central Region honors for the first time of their careers by finishing in the top-35 of their respective races.
At the NCAA III Central Regional held Saturday, Nov. 16 at Wartburg College, Lindhorst placed eighth from the field of 209 competitors with a time of 22:42 on the 6K course. This will be Lindhorst’s first appearance at the national championships.
Kelly placed 17th overall in the men’s race, from the field of 199 competitors. He covered the 8k course with a time of 26:05.4.
Lindhorst and Kelley will attempt to earn All-America honors by placing in the top-35 at the national championships that will take place at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky, Saturday, Nov. 23.
Spalding University and the Louisville Sports Commission are hosting both the men's and women's national championships Nov. 23 The men’s race will begin at 9:45 a.m. (Central), followed by the women’s race at 10:45 a.m. (Central).
