Luther battled No. 20 Loras College tonight at Lillis Court, but was defeated by a final of 87-84.
A lay-up by James Kappus gave the Norse an 84-83 lead with four seconds left in the game. The Duhawks moved the ball across half court and called a time-out with two ticks left on the clock. On the in bounds pass, the Norse fouled Josh Ruggles, who walked to the charity stripe and made two free throws, giving the Duhawks an 85-84 lead. Following a Luther attempted length of the court pass that was not touched by any player, Loras took the ball out of bounds under their own basket. The in bounds pass went to Cole Navigato who was fouled. He finished the game with two free throws securing the come-from-behind three point victory.
Both teams shot the ball well with Luther connecting on 50.8% of its attempts and Loras connecting on 49.2%. Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds, but the Duhawks made eight more free throws then the Norse that proved to be the difference in the ball game.
Ruggles led all scorers with 25 points. Ryan DiCanio added 22, while Demond George and Jordan Boyd finished with 17 and 10 respectively.
The loss gives Luther an American Rivers Conference record of 1-14, 7-16 overall. Loras secured the No. 2 seed for the six-team conference tournament and is now 11-4, 19-5.
Luther wraps up its season this Saturday at home when it will host the defending national champions Nebraska Wesleyan University at 4:00 p.m.
