Luther College accomplished something it had not accomplished in 13 years and that was score 100 points. Tonight the Norse defeated the Storm of Crown College by a final of 100-93. The Norse were close last year defeating the Storm 99-96 in overtime in St. Bonifacius, Minn. The last time a Luther team eclipsed the century mark was on Dec. 17, 2005 a 100-98 victory at Bethany Lutheran College.
The Norse trailed the Storm 46-38 at halftime. Shooting 51% in the second frame, Luther won the second half 62-47 en route to the victory. The free throw line proved huge for the Norse as they were 26-of-32.
Jared Nicolaisen and Spencer Sturges both produced career high point totals and Gage Thompson recorded a double-double. Nicolaisen led all scorers with 32 points. He was 10-of-18 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. His previous best was a 27-point effort against UW-Superior Nov. 25, 2017. For those wondering, the single game school record is 40 points by Harlan Wilson versus Iowa Wesleyan set during the 1955-56 campaign.
Sturges tallied 18 points connecting on 6-of-11 field goal attempts and was 6-of-8 from the charity stripe. Thompson tallied 17 points and grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.
Timothy Wendel and Christian Moore paced the Storm offensive attack with 28 and 22 points respectively.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 3-4, Crown fell to 5-3.
Luther returns to action one week from today when it will host Cornell College (IA) at 3:00 p.m.
