Luther battled the University of Dubuque tonight in the Regents Center but came up one point short as it was defeated by a final of 78-77. Dubuque led by as many as 11 points in the first half and by 10 with a little over three minutes remaining in the second frame. The Norse trailed 39-31 at halftime and outscored the Spartans 46-39 in the second frame.
Offensively, Luther did the majority of its damage from behind the three-point line connecting on 13-of-37 attempts. Dubuque made just four treys, but was 20-of-30 from the free throw line, that included 9-of-10 in the final 60 seconds of play. The Spartans also won the battle of the boards 50-37.
Five Spartans tallied double figures. Marcus McDaniel and Peter Ragen both had 17 points. Avery Butler was next with 14 and was followed by Deonte Newsome with 11 and Michael Williams with 10.
The loss gives Luther an American Rivers Conference record of 0-2, 2-4 overall. Dubuque improved to 2-1 in league play, 5-3 overall.
Luther returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 8, when it will host Crown College at 4:00 p.m.
