St. Mary's University (MN) defeated Luther tonight in Winona, Minn. by a final of 74-72. Both teams gave up double digit leads in this contest. Luther led by as many as 11 points in the first half (21-10) and trailed St. Mary's 37-33 at the break.
St. Mary's extended its lead to 13 (57-44) with 12 minutes remaining in the second half, only to watch Luther put together an 18-4 run and take its only lead of the second frame (62-61) at the 4:19 mark, thanks to two free throws by Jared Nicolaisen.
The Cardinals got back to a six point lead (73-67) thanks to eight consecutive points by Jakob Bailey who finished the night with 19. Nicoliasen answered with five points of his own and Luther trailed by one (73-72) with 20 ticks left on the clock. Bailey was fouled and made one of two free throws en route to the final score.
Joining the Cardinals Bailey in double digits was Eli Cave (19), Caden Freetly (14) and Kevin Gleason (13).
The loss gives Luther an overall record of 1-2, while St. Mary's improved to 3-1.
Luther returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 28 when it will travel to Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
