Luther improved to 4-0 after sweeping Hamline University at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. late last night. First pitch was at 11:55 pm Friday, Feb. 28 and game two finished in the early hours of Saturday, Feb. 29.
In game one, the Norse score four runs on six hits and the Norse pitching duo of Kyle Bode and Ross Hingst held the Pipers to three hits. Luther score what proved to be the game winning run in the bottom of the first and added three more in the fourth.
Luke Plunkett, Kyle Schnobrich and John Kern all drove in a run. Schnobrich drove in the game winner in the first on a single that scored Joe McKibben. Plunkett and Kern drove in runs in the fourth frame on a single and sacrifice respectively.
Bode (1-0) threw five complete innings and allowed two hits, walked four and struck out two. Hingst pitched the final two frames and allowed one hit and struck out two.
In the nightcap, or would it be the morningcap? What ever the official terminology, the Norse scored three runs on five hits. Luther took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second and added an insurance run in the fifth. The Pipers lone run came in the bottom of the seventh.
Tyler Boesel (1-0) allowed just one hit in six innings of work. Boesel struck out seven and walked one. From the end of the first inning to the middle of the fourth, he retired eight in a row. Then from the bottom of the fourth to the end of the sixth, he retired seven in a row.
Collin Chalmers (2) picked up his second save of the year. Chalmers allowed one run on no hits, walked one and struck out two.
Luther's next games will be in Tucson, Arizona March 6-8. The Norse will play five games in three days facing Bethesda University (CA), Marian University (WI), Carthage College (WI) and Bethany Lutheran College (MN).
