Luther swept St. Olaf College in the season opener for both teams at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. First pitch of game one was tossed at 9:30 p.m. The Norse won game won 6-3 and then defeated the Oles 5-4.
In game one, St. Olaf jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Norse answered with three runs in the fourth. St. Olaf tied the game at 3-3, scoring its final run of the game in the bottom half of the same frame. The Norse added three more runs in the top of the fifth to secure their first win of the season.
Owen Vander Linden and Kyle Schnobrich, who batted fourth and fifth respectively in the line-up, both produced three rbi. Vander Linden drove in all three of his rbi with doubles in the the fourth and fifth frames. He finished game one going 2-for-4 at the plate and scoring twice. Schnobrich was 2-for-3 driving in two runs in the fourth and one in fifth, both on singles.
Ross Hingst picked up the win on the mound and Colin Chalmers retired the three batters he faced in the top of the seventh and was credited with the save.
In game two, Luther was trailing St. Olaf 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Luther exploded for four runs on four hits to post the come-from-behind victory.
Johnson and Luke Plunkett started the frame with back-to-back doubles. McKibben followed with a single and two batters later, Kyle Schnobrich tied the game 4-4 with a single.
With designated hitter Derek McCready at the plate, Schnobrich stole second and then advanced to third on a passed ball. McCready reached on a hit-by-pitch. Schnobrich scored the game winner on a second passed ball with Tanner Reising at the plate.
Luther returns to U.S. Bank Stadium Feb. 28 when it will play Hamline University. This double header will begin at 11:55 p.m.
