The Luther Norse began their senior weekend series at home against the Buena Vista University Beavers with a two-game split. Game one went to the Beavers with a final of 9-6. Game two was captured by Luther with a 4-1 victory.
In the first contest, offense was abundant. The Norse tallied 10 hits and the Beavers were credited with 11. The Norse plated two runs in three different innings, the first, third and fifth. The Beavers scored early and often, posting five runs in the first two frames and adding a run in the fourth and sixth frames and two more in the eighth.
Bryce Hingst led the Luther attack going 3-for-5 with a run scored and three rbi. Hingst drove in a run during Luther's two-run first inning and two innings later, hit a two-run blast over the right-center field fence in the third. Lead-off man Kelby Johnson also went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two singles.
On the mound, Norse ace Joey Cardamon (5-4) picked up the loss. Cardamon threw five innings, allowed 10 hits, seven earned runs, he walked two and struck out four.
Buena Vista sophomore Eric LaRue (1-0), took over for starter Nick Henricks in the fourth and garnered the win. He tossed four innings and giving up three hits, two runs, a walk, and struckout four batters.
In the nightcap, Colin Coffey (5-3) picked up the complete game victory. Coffey allowed one earned run on seven hits, did not issue a walk and struck out seven.
Offensively, first baseman Owen Vander Linden had a big game. Vander Linden went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three rbi. He hit his third home run of the year, a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the seventh and drove in two more runs with a single to right in the eighth. Luke Plunkett also had a multiple hit game going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Due to the forecast of rain and snow tomorrow (Saturday) in the Decorah area, the final game of this three-game schedule has been moved to take place on Sunday, April 28. Start time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
