Luther wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 9-7 victory over UW-La Crosse this afternoon at Copeland Park.
Luther took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, scoring two runs with two outs and runners on second and third. Jake Halverson drove a single up the middle, that scored Owen Vander Linden and Bryce Hingst, who had both reach base safely with a single and double respectively.
The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the second, but the Norse responded by putting four runs on the board in the top of the fifth, then added one in the seventh and two in the eighth.
Vander Linden and Trent Athmann both had multiple hit efforts. Vander Linden was 2-for-5 and Athmann was 2-for-4. Athmann drove in two runs, while Vander Linden, Luke Plunkett, and Derek McCready all had one rbi.
Head Coach Bryan Nikkel used five different pitchers. John Colucci III picked up the win in relief. Colucci tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out five. Joey Cardamon pitched the final two innings and was credited with the save.
Luther begins American Rivers Conference play on Friday and Saturday, March 29-30 at the University of Dubuque. Friday's game (1x9) begins at 3:00 p.m. Saturday's twin bill (2x9) is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
