One day after Luther returned home from a three-game series at Nebraska Wesleyan University, it traveled to Waverly, Iowa to face Wartburg College for one game this evening. The two teams were getting in at least one game of the three-game series that was snowed out on April 13-14.
Luther played from behind the entire night as it was defeated by a final of 6-4. The Norse scored one run in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Knights did all of their damage in the second and third frames scoring three runs in each.
Jake Halverson, who was named the Iowa Conference Male Athlete of the Week earlier today, continued to swing a hot bat. Halverson was 5-for-5 and scored twice. Trent Athmann also had multiple hits going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Bryce Hingst was also credited with two RBI thanks to a double in the sixth.
Colin Coffey went the distance on the mound. Coffey (3-1) allowed six runs on 10 hits, walked two and struck out five.
The loss drops Luther's Iowa Conference record to 13-8, 23-12 overall. Wartburg remains atop the league standings with a mark of 13-5, 22-10.
Tomorrow, Luther wraps up its Iowa Conference schedule at the University of Dubuque. This one-nine inning game will begin at 3:00 p.m.
