For the first time this season Luther swept and Iowa Conference three-game series. After defeating Nebraska Wesleyan University Friday afternoon 13-3 (8), the Norse posted wins of 9-3 and 12-7 this afternoon.
The day got started with the dedication of the softball and baseball stadiums as well as the Paul Solberg Press Box. Brad Paulsrud '05 and former head coached Dick Papenfuss, Rich Halverson '59 and Solberg '61 threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Game one saw the Norse jump out to a quick 5-0 lead posting two runs in the first and three in the second. The Norse added three more in the fifth and one in the eighth en route to the victory.
Multiple hits were produced by Joe Silversmith, Cody Reimer, Luke Johnson and Jake Halverson. Silversmith, Reimer and Johnson were all 2-for-4, while Halverson was 2-for-3.
Nate Beckman (4-5) was credited with the win. Beckman allowed three runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out three in eight full innings of work.
In the nightcap, Luther blew open a one-run game (6-5), putting four runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Reimer (4-1) picked up the win on the mound. He threw six full, allowed five runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out three. He was also 2-for-3 and scored three times to help his own cause.
Jake Vogt, Jon Opdahl, and Silversmith all had two hits. Silversmith ended the afternoon 6-for-8 at the plate with three RBI.
The two wins gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 12-8, 22-14 overall. The Norse have won four in a row and 12 of their last 16 games.
Tuesday, May 2, Luther will complete its home schedule with a nine-inning game against University of Dubuque. The Spartans site atop the IIAC standings. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
