Luther split with league leading University of Dubuque this afternoon in Dubuque.
In game one, University of Dubuque posted a 3-2 come-from-behind victory. Trailing the Norse 2-1 after six, the Spartans scored a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to secure the victory.
In the fifth, Trent Athmann doubled and advanced to third when Jake Halverson reached on an error at first base. The very next batter, Jake Vogt also reach first on an error, this time by the Spartans pitcher, that allowed Athmann to score from third.
Joe Silversmith was credited with the loss in relief. Silversmith allowed one run on one hit, walked two and struck out one in his only inning of work the eighth. Cody Reimer threw the first seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He walked five and struck out three.
In the nightcap, Luther scored two unearned runs in the top of the 10th and secured a 5-4 victory. The Norse tallied nine hits and were led by Jon Opdahl and Cody Reimer who had two hits each. Silversmith drove in two runs, both on sac flies to right field, one in the eighth and one in the ninth. Hingst and Halverson were also credited with an RBI.
Nate Beckman went the distance on the mound and is now 3-5. Beckman allowed four runs on 10 hits and struck out six.
The split gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 9-8, 19-14 overall. Dubuque is now 13-4 in league play, 19-13 overall. These two teams will wrap up their three-game series at Luther on Tuesday, May 2. Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
Next for the Norse is a three-game series at home against Nebraska Wesleyan University. The first game will be Friday, April 28 at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, the two teams will play a double header with the first game starting at Noon.
