Luther swept Wartburg this afternoon 7-6, 6-4 and won the three game series 2-1. The Knights entered today's twin bill unbeaten in Iowa Conference play and on a nine-game win streak.
In game one, Joe Silversmith picked up the win in relief and helped his own cause by driving in a the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Silversmith took over for Cody Reimer in the top of the seventh with Luther leading 5-4. The Norse added a run in the bottom of the eighth and needed three outs to secure the victory, but Wartburg added two runs in the top of the ninth to level the score at 6-6. Following walks by Jake Vogt and Jon Opdahl, Silversmith sent a single to left field that scored Vogt for the winning run.
After producing just two hits yesterday, the Norse bats came alive this afternoon. Mitch Bruggers was 3-for-4 and scored three times. Joey Sullivan was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Bryce Hingst drove in three runs going 2-for-4 at the plate.
In the nightcap, Luther scored four times in the fourth and twice in the sixth to secure the sweep. Teddy Klingsporn tossed a complete game and is now 4-0. Klingsporn allowed four runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out five.
Bruggers and Hingst continued to swing hot bats. Bruggers was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Hingst went 2-for-3 and also drove in two runs. Reimer also had multiple hits posting a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
Luther is now 5-6 in the Iowa Conference 12-10 overall. Wartburg fell to 6-2 in league play, 15-9 overall.
Tuesday, the Norse travel to Central College for one nine inning game that will begin at 3:00 p.m.
