Luther swept Coe this afternoon 5-4 (11) and 3-1 to level its Iowa Conference record to 3-3.
In game one, the Norse scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to send game one into extra frames. With the score tied 1-1 heading into the top of the ninth, Coe scored three runs on two hits and led 4-1 as the Norse faced what looked to be like their last at-bats heading into the bottom of the frame. The Norse responded with three runs on four hits that leveled the score 4-4. Doubles by Jon Opdahl and Mitch Bruggers provided the punch needed to send the game into extra frames.
In the bottom of the 11th, Jake Vogt led off with a walk. Joey Sullivan laid down a bunt that Coe pitcher Lucas Robbins fielded but his throw to second was not in time. Bruggers then laid down a 1-3 sacrifice bunt that advanced Vogt to third and Sullivan to second. Vogt scored what proved to be the game winner on a balk.
In game two, Teddy Klingsporn threw a complete game and improved to 3-0. Klingsporn allowed one run on seven hits, walked two and struck out five. The Kohawks scored their lone run in the top of the sixth.
Luther scored once in the first and twice in the second to secure the nightcap victory. Four wild pitches by Coe starter David Keaton led to all three of Luther's runs. Joey Sullivan was credited with the only RBI for the Norse on a fielder choice in the first frame.
The sweep gives Luther an overall record of 10-7. Coe fell to 3-3 in league play, 10-6 overall.
Luther returns to Iowa Conference play on Tuesday, April 4 when it will host Central College. This double header (2x9) will begin at Noon.
