Six Luther Baseball Players Named All-Conference

The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) has announced the 2017 all-conference baseball team as selected by the head coaches. The all-conference team is comprised of 16 first-team honorees and 16 second-team selections.

Six members of the Luther College baseball team have been recognized on this year's team, three on the first-team and three on the second-team.

Earning first-team honors included senior Joe Silversmith, senior Cody Reimer and junior Mitch Bruggers. Silversmith is making his second appearance on the all-conference team after being named a second-team selection in 2016. He led the Norse in a number of statistical categories that included batting average (.367), RBI (33), triples (5), home runs (5), slugging percentage (.648) and on-base percentage (.462). He also stole a team high 14 bases in 14 tries. 

Bruggers batted .318 and was selected first-team as the designated hitter. He tallied 12 doubles and drove in 20 runs. 

Reimer was selected first-team utility player. He batted .313 with 25 RBI this season and played in every game except one either starting in the outfield or on the mound. On the mound he posted a record of 5-1 with an ERA of 3.55. 

Second-team honors went to senior pitcher Nate Beckman and sophomores Bryce Hingst and Jake Vogt. Beckman is now a two-time all-conference honoree. Last year, he was named the league's Pitcher of the Year. This year, he led the Norse pitching staff with an ERA of 2.60 in 83 innings of work while posting a record of 5-5.

Hingst and Vogt are making their first appearance on the all-conference team. Hingst finished second on the squad in batting average (.340) and was fourth in RBI (23). Defensively, he was credited with 391 putouts, 18 assists and eight errors while starting every game at first base. Vogt started every game in center field. He batted .311 and led the team with 16 doubles while driving in 20 runs. Defensively, he recorded 87 putouts, had 17 assists and four errors.

Senior pitcher Teddy Klingsporn was named honorable mention all-conference. Klingsporn completed his final year on the mound with a record of 7-2, worked 65 2/3 innings and had an ERA of 4.11.
