The Luther College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the 2015 Unity Bowl for Special Olympics on Sunday, Nov. 15. A total of 34 Special Olympians from Decorah and the surrounding area joined Luther College athletes for an afternoon of entertainment.
"The Norse Unity Bowl was a great event for all those involved," stated junior Patrick Larson who organized the event. "Both the Luther student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes had a great afternoon and I think everyone was reminded of the power athletics can have in bringing people together."
The day's activities began in the Regents Center where the group watched the men's basketball season opener against St. Scholastica and following a Special Olympics video on the Regents Center video board, each Olympian walked to center court and was introduced at halftime.
Following the game, the group moved to Oneota Lanes in Decorah, where an Olympian was paired with a Luther athlete for the remainder of the afternoon for some bowling and food.
"Seeing the excitement from the Special Olympians throughout the day really made the Unity Bowl such a rewarding experience," commented Lindsey Uphoff SAAC President. "Patrick Larson put so much time and effort into making this a day to remember for not only the Special Olympians, but the Luther athletes as well. It was an awesome afternoon."
